Right now, I'm 26 weeks pregnant. It is my last week in the second trimester. This is how far along my mom was when she gave birth to my little sister Chelsea. It has been so hard to comprehend how that is even possible. I feel big, but not big enough to have a full-grown baby. But I guess my mom wasn't either. Little Chelsea came into the world at just 2 lbs 6 oz.
Even then, she got sick. Between spinal meningitis and other infections, she dropped below 2 pounds for a while. But slowly, she got stronger and continued to gain weight.
To give you an idea of how small she really was, below is a picture of my dad reaching into her incubator. Notice how his hand can cover her entire body.
They're not sure why my mom went into labor so early with Chelsea, especially after three perfectly healthy pregnancies. On one hand, it's terrifying knowing that at any moment our little girl could decide she's ready to make her grand entrance. But on the other hand, it's very comforting to know that even this early, her chances of survival are pretty good. Even though it was all so scary, especially 19 years ago, Chelsea is perfectly healthy now. We're glad you're here Chelsea - we just wished you had waited another three months or so!
